Fall Prevention

The falls prevention program runs for approximately four weeks with two sessions held each week. Each session is 2 1/2 - 3 hours duration with refreshments provided.

An initial assessment is undertaken prior to the commencement of the program. The Physiotherapist and Occupational Therapist will work with the client to determine suitability for the program and to develop specific goals.

During these sessions the client works with all members of our Outpatient Rehabilitation team inculding Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Dietician and Pharmacist with the aim to achieve goals and educate on falls prevention over the course of the program.

Physiotherapy sessions will involve participants undertaking excercise programs in both our Outpatient Gym and Hydrotherapy Pool to improve balance, strength and general conditioning.

Educational sessions are held by the Occupational Therapist, Dietician and Pharmacist to educate participants on reducing the risk of falls in the home and in the community, correct nutrition to prevent falls and how some medications may increase the risk of falls.

Prior to the completion of the program, participants undergo a re-assessment to guage progress and an ongoing Home excercise program will be provided for each participant to continue excercise in the long term. The Outpatient Rehabilitation team also works closely with the referring health professional providing a discharge report on completion of the program.

On most occasions the cost of the program is fully covered by Private Health Insurance or Department of Veteran Affairs.
