When the unit opened in 1998 we began with seven patients a month and this figure has grown to about 30 – 40 patients a month, with treatments encompassing all chemotherapy protocols and supportive therapies, such as blood transfusions and other intravenous therapies in the management of cancer.
We wish to introduce to you to our Oncology Nurse Consultant, Cath O’Dwyer. Cath came to us from the UK with over 15 years experience in Oncology and is committed to your care.
You can request to be referred to our unit for your cancer treatments.
You are welcome to phone or visit us to meet our staff or speak with the Oncology Nurse Consultant, Cath O’Dwyer or the Hospital Director, Linda Huxley anytime before or during your treatments on 9977 9977.
Some of our Patients
Mrs Anne Rafferty of Balgowlah, who has her own program on Northern Beaches Radio, has been receiving treatment over the past two years and has this to say:
“The staff and atmosphere is a combination of professionalism and friendliness. I have my ‘own’ chair and heat pack and I just have to blink and there’s a cup of tea. We patients call the Oncology Unit ‘The Club.’ There are discussions about films, books, holidays and hobbies. I’ve even rehearsed my Toastmasters speeches there. When needed, there is also the reassurance that confidential issues can be discussed with complete discretion. When you have an ongoing condition, it makes such a difference to know that there is a caring environment in which your quality of life is so greatly enhanced.”
Mrs Stevens of Dee Why, who has just celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary, received treatment from Manly Waters Private Hospital Oncology Service for over three years and has this to say.
“I found the Oncology Nurse Consultants to be lovely and I had excellent treatment in a beautiful sunny room over looking Manly Cove. We all became friends swapping recipes & interests. I had a lovely surprise at my 100th treatment, when the Oncology Nurse Consultant put on a special morning tea for me which was attended by the Hospital Director. I received flowers, a gift plus had my photo taken. I still keep in touch with the Unit by going to the annual ‘Big Morning Tea’ or I just drop in to see the staff and other patients, who have become my friends.”
